Getting My Science on With Advanced Derma-Care
After being pampered at the hands of Gentlemen’s Tonic, I was keen to try some products from their new Advanced Derma-Care range. Developed in-house with one of Europe’s leading laboratories, this comsmoceutical range is specifically designed for men’s skin.
“But it’s just skin!” I hear you cry – an argument put forth by my good wife and co-conspirator in her piece for Manporium. Her argument is a sound one: the best quality products are not to be found in the male grooming aisle, but with a caveat – a lot of these products aren’t formulated for male skin.
I mentioned this in my review of my facial at Gentlemen’s Tonic: Men’s skin is thicker, less sensitive (generally) and more prone to oiliness. As such, products designed specifically for male skin needs to take all of this into account. Active ingredients can be a bit more concentrated, and additional components are required to try and control that oil.
Enter Gentlemen’s Tonic and their Advanced Derma-Care range, who were kind enough to send through some samples of their Power Packed Moisturiser, Brightening Serum and Time Control Solution.
Now, I’ll save you the surprise, these products don’t come cheap (the moisturiser alone is £89/100ml) – and honestly I previously have not given much thought to what I’ve put on my face, opting for a fairly haphazard moisturising routine. That being said, these products have genuinely changed that. You get what you pay for. Good quality skin care is generally not cheap. I’m a convert, albeit likely to be slightly poorer (but obviously more beautiful) for it.
Advanced Derma-Care Power Packed Nourishing Moisturiser
We’ll start with the basics – moisturiser. If you’re not already using this as part of your daily routine, you really should be. Moisturisers do what they say on the tin: moisturise.
Your skin produces a natural moisturiser – called a Natural Moisturising Factor (NMF). NMF however is quickly washed away with soap, sweat and even ultra-violet light. As such, your skin will quickly become dry if adequate steps aren’t taken.
Enter the one of the key ingredients in the Power Packed Nourishing Moisturiser: Hydroviton Plus. I know, I know, another made up molecule dreamt up by a marketer… but there is science behind it.
Essentially Hydroviton is a mixture of two types of molecules. One is small and attracts water (hygroscopic). It penetrates the upper layers of your skins and delivers moisture deep down, while restoring your skin’s ability to produce NMF. The other is a long chain molecule that essentially forms a film on the surface of your skin to keep that moisture trapped. The result? Your skin is immediately more moisturised, stays this way for longer, but it’s ability to moisturise itself is also improved.
Despite my previous admission to a haphazard moisturising routine, I’ve now been using this day and night for a good couple of weeks, and my skin is the best it has been in ages. The moisturiser is not oily or greasy, it’s quickly absorbed and very lightly scented with bergamot essential oil. Apply it day and night.
Advanced Derma-Care Brightening Serum
Next up, for application in the mornings before the moisturiser, is Gentlemen’s Tonic Brightening Serum. It’s effectively a concentrated moisturiser, but focusses primarily on the small molecules to penetrate the skin and provide long-lasting effects.
The Brightening Serum is probably my favourite product out of the three. It gives you an immediate improvement, smoothing the skin and giving a brighter appearance.
It’s not all for show, however. Its vitamin A and E content serves as an anti-oxidant, hoovering up all those nasty free radicals that contribute to aging and UV damage. Vitamin C is there in the form of Magnesium Ascorbyl Sorbate (yes, science), which is basically all the goodness of your normal Vitamin C, but less concentrated and less likely to irritate sensitive skin (a lot of vitamin C formulas are very acidic and should be used with care, lest your face fall off). The vitamin C helps promote collagen production in your skin, which will keep it firm and tight.
Magnesium Ascorbyl Phosphate is in the mix too – a powerful anti-oxidant, it also brightens skin by whitening and inhibiting skin cell melanin production. It’s also an anti-inflammatory, so will help with some of that puffiness we men are prone to in the morning.
Advanced Derma-Care Time Control Solution
I’m not thirty yet, and whilst the beard does cover a good portion of my face, I’d rather what is left exposed doesn’t look like old tissue paper before I hit middle-age. So, some sort of anti-ageing routine seems fitting as a preventative measure at least.
The Time Control Solution has three key ingredients. Alpha Lipoic Acid is a powerful anti-ageing, anti-inflammatory anti-oxidant, that is easily absorbed through the membranes of your skin cells, reducing the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, and helping shrink pores, all the while tackling those free-radicals that will age you skin.
Ingredient two is Alistin, which is an anti-ageing peptide that protects the collagen in your skin from being degraded. The longer your skin maintains its collagen levels, the longer it will stay firmer and wrinkle-free.
Finally, vitamin C, this time in the form of ascorbic acid. It’s another powerful anti-oxidant, but also inhibits the production of melanin. The benefit? It’ll help keep dark spots associated with ageing and sun damage at bay. As mentioned before, it’ll boost your collagen production for up to 72 hours, so will keep your skin feeling firmer, reducing fine lines and wrinkles.
Apply the Time Control Solution in the evenings before the moisturiser.
So, the summary? While they are expensive, I’m extremely impressed with the products Gentlemen’s Tonic have created. I don’t think my skin has looked this great in ages – I suggest you give them a try too.
