Penhaligon’s Bayolea Beard and Shave Oil

Based on their Bayolea fragrance, Penhaligon’s Bayolea Beard and Shave Oil is designed to moisturise the skin and prepare it for shaving, and for those of the ‘beardier’ persuasion (such as myself), it will soften and smooth one’s resplendent face-furniture.

The oil contains a blend of sunflower, grape seed and wheat germ; and is lightly fragranced with Bayolea.  I won’t pretend to be a perfumer, so will use Penhaligon’s description from their website:

“Bayolea is a bright and exhilarating fragrance, opening with a refreshing burst of mandarin, tangerine and lemongrass. The invigorating and warming heart of cardamom, black pepper, neroli and lavender rests on a resolutely masculine base of cedar, sandalwood, musk, moss, patchouli and amber.”

My own take on it – initial window is fresh, slightly citrusy and spicy, which then develops a really nice musky finish as it matures on the skin.  It also complements my other Penhaligon’s cologne Endymion.

The only slightly problematic thing about it is getting the bloody stuff out of the bottle.  It comes with a wonderful glass stopper, but the relatively large bottle opening and lack of any dropper is not conducive to controlling the amount in your palm and hence on your face.  I might suggest that Penhaligon’s update the design with a dropper or stick to make life a bit easier.

Other than actually getting it onto my beard, I really love this stuff.  The fragrance is very subtle and it makes my beard feel very soft.
