5 The Lawn
For the spring bank holiday at the end of May, Anna and I decided that we would take the opportunity to return to St. Leonards-on-Sea to 5 The Lawn for some much needed R&R.
We stayed here a couple of years ago as a surprise for my birthday, and there is always that faint worry on returning to a place that the memory doesn’t quite live up to the reality. Not so with 5 The Lawn.
Aptly named The Hideaway, 5 The Lawn is a self-enclosed studio apartment in the basement of a period town house in St. Leonards-on-Sea on the south coast. To call it a studio apartment, however, doesn’t really do 5 The Lawn justice – it is impeccably furnished, with quirky interior design, its very own private indoor pool, hot tub and steam room.
The property is owned by the lovely Jude and Mark. They are both on hand to help as much as you need, but are quite prepared to let you go full hermit if you do wish – you really can hide away from the world here. There’s always a bottle of champagne on arrival, a massive platter of fresh fruit for grazing in the kitchen and possibly the most annoyingly envy-inducing integrated Hotpoint coffee machine one could wish for. There’s nothing quite like stumbling to it in the morning for fresh bean-to-cup coffee.
Access is through a large green door to the side of the town house, beyond which a path bordered by plants and flowers leads to the entrance to the rear. A small patio with a table for two (where breakfast is served during good weather) looks onto a meadow garden, beneath a canopy of trees and climbing plants.
You enter into a large open-plan living area, with a double bed at the far end. Along the walls are
limited edition pieces of art, and various ‘V’ numerals in reference to the eponymous property’s location. A huge Rolf Benz sofa is on hand to relax into, preferably with a glass of champagne in hand (kept cool by the wine cooler in the kitchen).
Did I mention there’s a massive drop-down projector screen to watch your favourite movies? If the (really) big screen isn’t quite your bag, you can defer to the regular LCD. It’s all integrated, with speakers in each room (including the pool), controlled by a tablet, so your music can follow you wherever you go. Netflix is on hand to watch all your favourite films.
The highlight is definitely the pool. It’s not large, so don’t expect to be doing any laps here, but there’s something ever so serene about floating weightless in the pool while gazing upwards at the mirrors on the ceiling upon which the light dances. It does have a jet feature, but to be honest, I found it far more relaxing without (they’re quite err… aggressive)!

Breakfast is included in the rate, and Mark – a chef – is on hand to make anything your heart desires. If you like, Mark will also happily prepare lunch or dinner for you too.
5 The Lawn is really wonderful – whether you want to use it as a crash-pad while exploring St. Leonards or Hastings, or whether you just want to retreat from the world, it’s got everything you need.
